It was not immediately clear how many people were injured. Federal and local police said the cause of the crash near Riedlingen, roughly 158km (98 miles) west of Munich, remains under investigation. According to Express Tribune, German daily Bild said the passenger train was travelling from the German town of Sigmaringen to the city of Ulm when at least two train carriages derailed in a wooded area.
A police spokesperson told AFP that: “The accident occurred at around 6:10 pm (1710 GMT) near the town of Riedlingen in Baden-Wuerttemberg state.” All train passengers evacuated derailment. Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl said all passengers have been evacuated from the carriages. The minister, however, said the carriages must be raised to ensure there is no one under the train. "Currently, we have three deaths. In addition, several dozen were injured, including several seriously.
